MCP Apps: When an AI Conversation Needs an Interface

Explore MCP Apps for interactive business workflows, from choosing records to reviewing actions, and learn what a useful first implementation needs.

Some decisions are easier when a person can see the records involved. Asking an assistant to describe twenty orders, then referring to “the third one with the later delivery date”, creates avoidable ambiguity. MCP Apps brings an interactive interface into that conversation.

The MCP maintainers introduced MCP Apps as an official extension on 26 January 2026. Tools can reference UI resources that supporting hosts render in a sandboxed frame. The published SDK provides communication between the interface and the host. This is an established 2026 development assessed here in October, not a feature announced this week.

I would use it when direct interaction makes a business task easier to understand. A table, selector or review panel can reduce the amount of state a person must hold in their head while talking to the assistant.

Choose the decision that needs a visible object

Consider a proposed support workflow for reviewing several orders belonging to a customer. The assistant can explain the situation, while an interface shows the order references, dates and statuses. The person selects the relevant order directly. That selection has a stable identity rather than depending on its position in a paragraph.

The interface should make the choice visible without overwhelming the conversation. Show the fields needed for the current decision and provide a route to more detail. An administrative dashboard copied into a small embedded frame may be harder to use than the original text response.

I build Conviro, a customer-support platform. For a product in this category, an in-conversation review panel would be interesting where a person needs to compare source records before deciding what to do. That is the kind of design opportunity I would evaluate with MCP Apps.

Let the backend remain the source of truth

A visible interface can make an action understandable, but it cannot make stale data current. If an order changes while the person is reviewing it, the application needs a defined response. Recheck the relevant state before accepting a consequential operation and explain any change that affects the decision.

I would represent a selection with a record identifier and, where useful, a version or retrieval reference. Keep display labels separate from the values that identify the business object. A translated label or reordered table must not change which record the application acts on.

Interface state What the person should understand
Information loaded Which records and retrieval context are being shown.
Action proposed Which object will change and what the change means.
Action pending Whether the application has accepted the request.
Action completed or rejected The actual result and the available next step.

This also helps after an interruption. A reopened conversation should not present an old proposed action as if it were still valid simply because the interface can render the previous response.

Keep a usable path for different hosts

Supporting hosts may offer different capabilities and interaction constraints. I would verify the target host rather than assume that any client advertising MCP support renders the same interface. A useful textual result can still explain the key finding when the richer UI is unavailable.

Accessibility belongs in the first implementation. Give controls meaningful labels, make keyboard navigation predictable and use more than colour to communicate status. Those checks help ordinary use as well as unusual client environments.

The server behind the app also needs a compatible transport and tool contract. My review of MCP’s 2026 HTTP changes covers that deployment boundary. For shopping workflows, UCP addresses the separate commerce contract that the interface may need to work with.

Measure whether the interface improves the task

For a first pilot, choose one decision and compare the effort required to complete it. Record wrong selections, requests for clarification and recoverable failures. A more attractive response is welcome, but the practical benefit is a clearer, more reliable task.

If your assistant needs that kind of interaction with existing business records, my AI integration service can help define the interface, backend contract and acceptance checks together.
