AI-search discussions often jump from a screenshot of a citation to a claim about business growth. Google’s 2026 Search Console announcements add more useful measurement surfaces, but they still need careful interpretation. The important question is which visibility each report describes and how that relates to a customer finding your service.
On 3 June 2026, Google announced dedicated views of impressions in generative AI features for Search and Discover. The announcement described dimensions including pages, countries and dates, and stated that the initial rollout covered a subset of websites. The data also remained part of the overall performance reporting.
On 24 September 2026, Google announced a multimodal search-type filter covering image-led searches, including Lens and image uploads. That rollout began globally, with metrics appearing for sites receiving those queries. These announcements should not be read as a promise that every property has every report or a complete attribution trail.
Ask what the report can answer
A visibility report can help identify which pages are appearing in a particular search experience. It does not by itself establish that the visitor understood the offer, submitted an enquiry or became a customer. I would keep those questions in separate parts of the measurement plan.
| Layer | Question | Evidence to review |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Where did the site appear? | The available Search Console report and its documented dimensions. |
| On-site behaviour | What happened after a visit? | Consented analytics and successful enquiry events. |
| Commercial outcome | Was the enquiry relevant? | The enquiry record and subsequent sales outcome. |
This distinction prevents a reporting shortcut. A service page receiving more visibility may be attracting buyers, students or people researching an unrelated use of the same term. The commercial interpretation needs more than an upward line.
Check availability before changing the dashboard
I would first inspect the reports available for the actual property. Record the filter, date range and fields exported. Do not create a zero-valued dashboard panel for a report that is unavailable, and then describe that zero as proof that the business has no AI visibility.
When combining overall and specialised views, establish whether they overlap. The June announcement explicitly describes the AI visibility data as included in overall reporting. Adding those totals together would therefore not be a sound way to estimate a larger audience.
For a before-and-after comparison, keep the report definition stable. Save the period and filters with the export. If the report itself becomes available midway through the period, note that change rather than interpreting the start of reporting as the start of customer discovery.
Give a multimodal result a useful destination
For a hypothetical retailer, image-led discovery might lead to a product page. My first review would ask whether the product identity remains clear after the visitor arrives: the correct variant, current availability and a usable route to the next step. More visual impressions are less useful if the destination does not resolve the customer’s question.
For a service business, the same principle applies to diagrams, demonstrations or screenshots already used on the site. The landing page should explain the actual service and its limits. This does not mean every text article needs a generated illustration; content should serve the task.
Make automation preserve the report’s meaning
An assistant can help investigate the data, but a connector must expose the relevant fields. My mcp-gsc review explains how to start with a reproducible query and check the installed tool’s capabilities. A new report in Google’s interface does not automatically update every external integration.
Keep external AI-answer sampling distinguishable as well. A GEO readiness score or sampled citation is a different measurement from an impression reported by Google. They can complement each other when their scope remains visible.
If you need to turn these reports into a practical acquisition review, my technical SEO and measurement service can help connect the available evidence to landing-page work and qualified enquiries.
