Performance Max vs Standard Shopping: Which Google Ads Campaign Is Best for Your Store?

Performance Max promises automation across all Google channels. Standard Shopping gives more control. Here is how they compare for online stores and how to decide which to use.

If you advertise an online store on Google, you have probably asked this question: Performance Max or Standard Shopping? Google pushes Performance Max (PMax) as the default for e-commerce, but many advertisers still get good results with Standard Shopping.

The honest answer: it depends on your data, budget and how much control you need. This comparison helps you decide.

What is Standard Shopping?

Standard Shopping campaigns show your products from Google Merchant Center in Shopping results. You control:

  • Which products are in which campaigns and ad groups
  • Bids (manual or automated)
  • Negative keywords
  • Networks and devices
  • Search term reporting

It is focused on Shopping placements only.

What is Performance Max?

Performance Max is a goal-based campaign that uses Google’s automation to show ads across all Google channels from one campaign: Search, Shopping, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail and Maps.

You provide:

  • Your conversion goals (and ideally values)
  • Your product feed
  • Creative assets (images, videos, headlines, descriptions)
  • Audience signals (to help the system start)

Google’s algorithms decide where, when and to whom ads are shown.

Side-by-side comparison

Standard Shopping Performance Max
Channels Shopping All Google channels
Control over bids High Low (goal-based bidding)
Search term visibility Full search terms report Limited (search term insights and categories)
Negative keywords Yes Limited, at account or campaign level depending on current features
Creative needed Feed only Feed plus images, videos, text (optional for feed-only setups)
Setup effort Moderate Lower to start, more to optimise well
Best for Control, small budgets, specific strategies Scale, strong conversion data, broad reach

Google regularly adds features to Performance Max, especially around reporting and exclusions. Check the current options in your account.

When Performance Max usually works well

  • You have reliable conversion tracking with values (revenue)
  • Your account has enough conversion volume for the algorithm to learn
  • You want reach beyond Shopping (YouTube, Display) without managing many campaigns
  • You have good creative assets
  • Your product feed is clean and rich

When Standard Shopping is often better

  • Small budgets where every euro must go to the most proven placements
  • You need full search term control (for example to exclude competitor or irrelevant terms)
  • Your conversion tracking is not reliable yet
  • You want to test specific products or margins in isolation
  • Your brand is strong and you want to see clearly how much revenue comes from brand searches

Can you run both?

Yes. Many accounts run both. Historically, Performance Max took priority over Standard Shopping for the same products; Google has changed how the two campaign types interact, with ad rank playing a bigger role. Check Google’s current documentation for how overlapping campaigns compete, and avoid having the same products in both without a clear reason.

A common structure:

  • PMax for most products, segmented by margin or performance using custom labels
  • Standard Shopping for specific tests or products that need tight control

The foundation matters more than the campaign type

Both campaign types depend on the same three things:

1. Conversion tracking

If Google only sees part of your sales, it optimises on bad data. Fix tracking first (see why GA4 and Google Ads conversions go missing).

2. Product feed quality

Titles, categories, images and attributes decide which searches your products match. Disapproved products do not show at all (see my Merchant Center troubleshooting guide).

3. Landing page conversion rate

Ads bring the traffic; your store has to convert it. Speed, product pages and checkout all affect your return on ad spend (see 30 CRO tips).

Optimising Performance Max

  • Segment by margin and performance using custom labels, so you can set different ROAS targets
  • Use value-based bidding with accurate revenue, and consider profit-based values if you can
  • Exclude brand terms where available if you want to measure non-brand performance
  • Add strong creative: real product videos and images perform better than auto-generated assets
  • Give it time: avoid big changes during the learning period
  • Check placements and insights regularly

Optimising Standard Shopping

  • Structure by product groups (brand, category, margin)
  • Add negative keywords weekly from the search terms report
  • Use priority settings and query sculpting for advanced control
  • Adjust bids by device, location and schedule, or use Smart Bidding once you have enough data

Frequently asked questions

Is Performance Max replacing Standard Shopping?

Google strongly promotes Performance Max, but Standard Shopping is still available and useful for many advertisers.

What budget do I need for Performance Max?

There is no fixed minimum, but the algorithm needs enough conversions to learn. With very small budgets, results can be unstable.

Why does Performance Max spend so much on brand searches?

PMax can capture searches for your brand, which converts well but may have happened anyway. Use brand exclusions where available and compare with your organic brand traffic.
